What is the Men’s Shed?
The modern Men’s Shed is an updated version of the shed in the backyard that has long been a part of Australian culture. Men’s Sheds are springing up all around Australia. They are places where men can be restoring furniture, fixing bicycles for a local school, making Mynah bird traps, fixing lawn mowers or making a kids cubby house for raffles.
You may see young men working with older men learning new skills and perhaps something about life from the men they work with. You will see tea-bags, coffee cups and a comfortable area where men can sit and talk. And perhaps men can learn to cook for themselves or they can learn how to contact their families by computer.
Good health is based on many factors including feeling good about yourself, being productive and valuable to your community, connecting to friends and maintaining an active body and an active mind. Becoming a member of a Men’s Shed gives a man that safe and busy environment where he can find many of these things in an atmosphere of old-fashioned mateship. And, importantly, there is no pressure.
Men can just come and have a yarn and a cuppa if that is all they’re looking for.
Members of Men’s Sheds come from all walks of life – the bond that unites them is that they are men with time on their hands and they would like something meaningful to do with that time.
Our Vision
For the Shed to be all that it can be for its Members
And for the Members to control its destiny!
A Men’s Shed is a Place to Work, A Place to Belong and a Place to Give Back
About Us
Communities@Work has auspiced and supported our shed in its growth from a series of men’s breakfasts in 2007. These originally started with help from St Mary in the Valley Church in Calwell and Calwell Community Centre (Anglicare).
We found a home at the Lake Tuggeranong Sea Scout Hall in 2008, where we could have morning tea, chat, play cards, computer training, do Tai Chi and much more.
Early in 2009, we accepted the Lions Club of Canberra City Inc offer of a facility on the Kambah Pool Road where we could do woodwork, metalwork, toy making and undertake both community and personal projects.
The ACT Government granted funds for the construction of a purpose built shed in Greenway, attached to the indoor sporting complex and in late 2013 we took occupancy of our new facility.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
What We Do
Our members gather for morning teas and chat and relax doing recreational activities. Once a month guest speakers talk on a wide range of interests and at the end of the month we have a BBQ.
We have a well equipped workshop which includes drill presses, band saws, thicknesser, sanding machines and work benches and a metal shop. Shed members make toys, repair furniture and work on projects for themselves and community groups.
We are a regular BBQ stall holder at Bunnings Tuggeranong. These events are a major source of fundraising for the Shed.
We undertake philanthropic projects to aid the general community.
Donations
Do you have tools and materials we can use? We use good timber, off cuts and pieces of board for our projects and toys. If you have surplus pieces of timber we would be grateful for the donation.
We accept old tools and power tools in working condition which we can use or refurbish, offer them to other Men’s Sheds or find a new home for them.
